What Are The Benefits Of Braces?
Getting the right orthodontics service and treatment can give you the following advantages:
- Helps to improve your oral health
- Prevents gum disease and tooth decay
- Prevents bone erosion
- Better digestion
- Improved comfort
- Confidence boost with a better smile
Who Are Braces Most Suitable For?
Metal braces are most suitable for adolescents between the ages of 10 to 14, as their teeth are more adaptive to change and lead to a more straightforward treatment process.
However, that’s not to say there is an age limit to when you can get dental braces. Many adults are receiving orthodontics treatment with braces – whether it is to resolve minor alignment or bite issues, or to generally improve their smiles.
What Types Of Braces Are Available?
Traditional braces consist of metal brackets fitted to the front of the teeth, with a metal wire threaded through each bracket. The wire is gradually tightened at various points throughout the treatment, putting pressure on your teeth to bring them into the desired position slowly.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic are functionally similar to traditional braces, but the brackets used match the colour of your teeth, making them more discreet and less noticeable than traditional metal braces.
As such, clear braces are a great choice if you’re considering wearing braces but prefer a more aesthetically pleasing option that won’t make you feel as self-conscious about your teeth.
What Is The Procedure For Getting Braces?
Your fitting appointment can last between 1-2 hours. During your appointment, we will first clean and dry your teeth, before applying an adhesive to attach the brackets to the front of your teeth and then thread a metal wire through the brackets.
Once your braces are fitted, we will schedule regular appointments to periodically adjust the dental wires to ensure that the treatment is progressing effectively. When your teeth have finally reached the desired position after the treatment period of between 12-24 months, we will remove the wires and brackets of your braces. After braces removal, follow-up appointments need to be scheduled to have retainers made to ensure your teeth remain in position.

This patient requested for conventional braces to address spaces in between her teeth and a congenitally missing tooth. We aligned her teeth and placed a composite buildup to replace her missing upper right tooth, secured by a fixed palatal wire. This will hopefully serve the patient until adulthood when she is ready to have a dental implant.

This patient presented with two over-retained deciduous (baby) upper canine teeth (eyeteeth). The treatment involved removing both baby teeth, creating adequate space on both sides for the adult canines to be aligned, and levelling the arch. Some refinements were required due to the discrepancy between the widths of the baby and the adult canine teeth.
